The Journaling Prompts I Use to Solve Tough Problems
A practical no BS guide based on your writing routine.
When life throws a curveball—or ten—I reach for my journal. No, it doesn’t magically fix everything (I wish), but it helps me untangle my thoughts and figure out my next move.
Journaling is like having a super wise best friend who lets you ramble, doesn’t judge, and somehow guides you to your own solutions. All you need are the right prompts to get the ball rolling.
Here are my go-to prompts for when I’m stuck, stressed, or spiraling into “what if” territory.
1. What’s the Real Problem Here?
This one forces me to stop dancing around the issue and face it head-on. Often, the “problem” isn’t what I think it is.
Example: “I’m not upset about missing the deadline; I’m upset I didn’t ask for help sooner.”
It’s like turning the lights on in a messy room—you can’t fix what you can’t see.
2. What’s Within My Control?
When everything feels overwhelming, this question reels me back in. I can’t control traffic, Karen’s attitude, or the weather. But I can control how I respond.
Example: “I can’t make Karen kinder, but I can set boundaries.”
The smaller the action, the better. Tiny wins build momentum.
3. What Would My Future Self Do?
This is my favorite for perspective shifts. Future Me, who’s calm, wise, and somehow owns a beach house always knows the right move.
Example: “Future Me wouldn’t waste energy stressing over this. She’d delegate and move on.”
Channeling Future You is oddly motivating.
4. What’s the Worst That Could Happen?
This one is great for taming spirals of doom. Write out your worst-case scenario in dramatic detail. Nine times out of ten, it’s not as bad as it feels.
Example: “Okay, so I miss the presentation. I won’t get fired; I’ll just have to reschedule.”
Side effect: You’ll laugh at how ridiculous your imagined catastrophes can be.
5. What’s One Small Step I Can Take Right Now?
This one is a lifesaver when I’m paralyzed by overthinking. It shifts the focus from all the things to just one thing.
Example: “Send that email. That’s it. Just one email.”
Result: One small step leads to another—and suddenly, you’re making progress.
Why These Prompts Work
They help you break big problems into manageable pieces, reframe negative thinking, and uncover solutions hiding in plain sight. Plus, writing it all down clears the mental clutter, leaving you with that ahh, I’ve got this feeling.
Whenever I’m stuck, these prompts are my secret weapon. They’re simple, effective, and don’t require anything except a pen, paper, and a willingness to get real with yourself.
Next time you’re grappling with a tough problem, try one or all of these prompts. You might not solve world hunger, but you’ll definitely feel clearer and more in control.
