The Networking Shift That Changed My Career...

Here’s the truth: People don’t remember pitches; they remember how you made them feel.

Transactional networking is like a vending machine: you put something in and expect something out. But relationships don’t work that way. People can sense when you’re more interested in what they can do for you rather than who they are.

How I Build Genuine Connections (and You Can Too)

Here are a few shifts that changed how I approach networking—and transformed my coaching career:

1. Lead with Curiosity

Stop trying to “sell yourself.” Start being genuinely curious about others. Ask questions like:

- “What inspired you to start your business?”

- “What’s been your biggest challenge lately?”

- “What’s one thing you’re really excited about right now?”

People light up when they feel seen and heard. Plus, their answers often reveal ways you can help or collaborate.

2. Focus on Giving, Not Getting

Networking isn’t about extracting value; it’s about creating it.

Share a resource, like a podcast episode or article, that might help them.

Offer to introduce them to someone in your circle who could solve a problem for them.

When you give without expecting anything in return, you build trust—and trust is the foundation of every great relationship.

3. Follow Up with Meaning

After meeting someone, ditch the generic LinkedIn message. Instead, send a thoughtful note - steal my format.

“Hi [Name], I loved chatting about [specific topic]. Let me know how [specific challenge] turns out—I’d love to help if I can!”

Adding a personal touch shows you were truly listening and care about staying connected.

Why This Works?

Networking isn’t about how many business cards (or followers) you collect. It’s about creating meaningful interactions that lead to trust and collaboration.

By focusing on building relationships rather than scoring opportunities, you’ll find that the opportunities come naturally. Whether it’s a referral, a partnership, or a new client, people will think of you because they know you—not just what you do.
